The units

LaunchDarkly bills on usage, not seats. Three units matter for experiments.

  • Service connections. One server-side SDK connected to one environment for a month. Serverless and short-lived processes bill by connection time.
  • Client-side MAU. Each unique user or device evaluated by a client-side, AI or edge SDK in a month.
  • Experimentation MAU. Unique users evaluated by any SDK and eligible for an experiment, counted across your account whether or not they entered one.

The plans

  • Developer, $0 forever. Unlimited seats and flags, 5 service connections, 1,000 client-side MAU and 100K experimentation MAU a month.
  • Foundation, pay as you go after a 14-day trial. The first 5 service connections are included, then $10 each a month. Client-side MAU costs $8.33 per 1,000 a month billed yearly, and the comparison table lists $10 per 1,000. No platform or seat fees.
  • Enterprise, custom. Adds advanced targeting, custom roles, approvals, release automation and SCIM.
  • Guardian, a separately priced Enterprise add-on for release monitoring, guardrail metrics and automatic rollback.

Kubernetes, serverless, Python and Ruby setups get custom rates, because they create many server-side connections.

Worked example

A SaaS web app with 20,000 monthly users. These inputs are made up to show the maths.

  • Server-side only. If your backend evaluates flags through 4 service connections, say 2 services in 2 environments, you fit the free Developer plan. 4 connections is under 5, and 20,000 experimentation MAU is under 100K.
  • Client-side SDK in the browser. 20,000 client-side MAU is far over the Developer plan's 1,000, so you move to Foundation. 20 x $8.33 = $166.60 a month billed yearly, or $1,999.20 a year. At the table's $10 per 1,000 it's $200 a month. The page doesn't say whether Developer's free 1,000 MAU carry over.
  • Experimentation MAU. 20,000 users stay under the 100K included each month.

Costs that aren't on the price list

  • The pricing page doesn't publish a rate for experimentation MAU above the included 100K.
  • Billing counts unique context keys evaluated in a month, so how you key anonymous and signed-in users affects the bill.
  • Engineering time for every variant, since there's no visual editor.
  • Observability usage beyond the included session replays, errors, logs and traces bills as you go.

Questions people ask

Is LaunchDarkly Experimentation included or an add-on?+

It's included. The pricing page lists A/B tests and experiments on the free Developer plan with 100K experimentation MAU a month, and experimentation features on Foundation and Enterprise too. Experiment approvals are Enterprise only.

How much does LaunchDarkly cost?+

Developer is free. Foundation is pay as you go at $10 per service connection a month after the first 5 and $8.33 per 1,000 client-side MAU a month billed yearly, with a 14-day trial. Enterprise and the Guardian add-on are custom priced.

Does LaunchDarkly have a visual editor?+

No. LaunchDarkly argues that WYSIWYG editors bypass code review and cause page flicker, so variants are built in code behind feature flags.

What stats does LaunchDarkly Experimentation use?+

Both Bayesian and frequentist analysis. The pricing page also lists CUPED variance reduction, sequential testing, sample ratio mismatch detection, multi-armed bandits and holdouts.

Can LaunchDarkly measure revenue?+

Yes, if you supply it. You can build a custom numeric metric such as average revenue per user from events your SDK sends, or use warehouse-native metrics from Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift or Databricks. It doesn't connect to payment tools like Stripe directly. Outtest reads revenue from the payment tool and judges every test on revenue per visitor.
