What Crazy Egg does
Crazy Egg is a behavior analytics and conversion optimization tool. Its own site says it started with website heatmaps in 2005. Today it bundles heatmap reports with five views (heatmap, scrollmap, confetti, overlay and list), session recordings, web analytics, conversion tracking and funnels, on-site surveys, popup calls to action, JavaScript error tracking and A/B testing. It installs with one snippet in the page head, or through integrations for Shopify, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Magento, Google Tag Manager, Segment and a few others.
A/B testing
You can build a variant in the Visual Page Editor, changing text, images, links, layout and visibility without code, or edit the HTML, CSS and JavaScript of any element. Split URL and redirect tests are supported as well. Traffic can be split by hand or by a multi-armed bandit that shifts visitors toward the better-performing variant.
Goals can be clicks on a button or link, a visit to a page such as an order confirmation, form submissions, Google, Meta or TikTok pixel events, or a custom Crazy Egg event. The testing page says significance comes from a chi-squared test. Audience targeting runs from device type on Plus, to country, UTM parameters, conversion status and more on Pro, to every available segment on Enterprise.
Heatmaps next to tests
The strongest part is how testing and behavior data connect. Crazy Egg can create a separate heatmap for each variant, filter recordings to people who did or didn't convert, and send variant views to Google Analytics 4. That context helps explain why a test went the way it did, which a testing-only tool won't show you.
AI features
AI analysis reads heatmaps and recordings and suggests page changes to try in future experiments. You can export heatmaps and recordings in an AI-friendly format, and Crazy Egg runs an MCP server so assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT can read your analytics. The A/B testing tool doesn't write variants for you.
Revenue measurement
A/B tests count conversions, not revenue from a store or payment tool. The Conversion Tracking API lets your servers send conversions with a monetary value and currency, and the conversion analytics reports show total conversion value. So you can get revenue into Crazy Egg with developer work, but the testing page lists conversion goals, not revenue, as what a test measures.
Limits
Plans are priced by tracked pageviews and billed annually. Starter includes heatmaps and recordings but not A/B testing, which starts on Plus. Tests run through the on-page script, and only conversion tracking has a server-side API. When you hit the monthly pageview limit, Crazy Egg doesn't charge overages. Data collection pauses until the 1st of the next month instead, which can stall a running test.
Who it suits
Crazy Egg fits small businesses, agencies and marketers who want to see how visitors behave and run simple tests without a complex setup. Agencies get unlimited domains and seats on every plan. Teams that need revenue-based results, or want the testing itself done for them, will need more.
Pros and cons
What Crazy Egg does well
- Heatmaps, session recordings, surveys, funnels, error tracking and A/B testing under one subscription.
- Each test variant can get its own heatmap and recordings, so you see why a version won, not only that it did.
- Unlimited tests, variants, domains and team members on plans with A/B testing.
- Choice of a manual traffic split or a multi-armed bandit that shifts traffic toward the better variant.
- No overage charges. Data collection pauses at the limit instead.
- A free plan for basic analytics and a 30-day free trial on paid plans.
Where it falls short
- A/B testing starts on Plus at $99 a month, and every paid plan is billed annually.
- Tests are judged on clicks, page visits, form submissions, pixel events or custom events. Shopify and Magento are install integrations, not revenue sources.
- AI analysis suggests changes from heatmaps and recordings, but you build every variant yourself.
- Tests run through the on-page script. Only conversion tracking has a server-side API.
- Targeting tests by country, UTM or conversion status needs Pro at $249 a month.
- Hitting the pageview limit pauses heatmaps and test data until the next month.
Questions people ask
How much does Crazy Egg cost?+
Paid plans are $29, $99, $249 and $599 a month (Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise), all billed annually. A free plan covers web analytics, instant heatmaps, conversion analytics and surveys. Prices checked on crazyegg.com on September 28, 2026.
Which Crazy Egg plan includes A/B testing?+
A/B testing starts on Plus at $99 a month, billed annually, with unlimited tests and variants. Starter doesn't include it. Targeting tests by country, UTM or conversion status needs Pro or Enterprise.
How does Crazy Egg pick an A/B test winner?+
Crazy Egg uses a chi-squared test to report the statistical significance of each variant against the others, alongside conversion rates over time. You can split traffic manually or let a multi-armed bandit shift traffic toward the better performer.
Does Crazy Egg charge overages?+
No. When you reach your monthly tracked pageviews, data collection pauses and resumes on the 1st of the next month. You can upgrade, or buy extra heatmap or recording capacity as an add-on through sales.
Can Crazy Egg measure revenue from A/B tests?+
Not from a payment tool directly. Its A/B goals are clicks, page visits, form submissions, ad pixel events and custom events. The Conversion Tracking API can send conversions with a monetary value from your own systems. Outtest, by comparison, judges every test on revenue per visitor from the payment tool.
