RevenueCat review

RevenueCat is the subscription backend many apps use for in-app purchases, and Experiments adds A/B tests of prices, trials and paywalls judged on revenue and lifetime value. It's included on every plan, so testing costs nothing beyond the 1% of tracked revenue you'd pay for RevenueCat anyway.
What it is
RevenueCat is a subscription and in-app purchase backend for iOS, Android and web apps, and its Experiments feature A/B tests prices, trials and paywalls and reports the results on revenue and lifetime value.
Best for
Subscription apps that want purchases, entitlements, paywalls and price tests in one place, especially teams already using RevenueCat for billing.

What RevenueCat does

RevenueCat handles in-app purchases and subscriptions across the Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Roku, Stripe, Paddle and its own RevenueCat Billing for the web. It validates purchases, tracks who is entitled to what, and gives you revenue charts, webhooks and data exports. Its homepage says it supports more than 146,000 apps, including ChatGPT, VSCO and Photoroom.

On top of that backend sit the growth tools: a no-code, remotely configured paywall editor, web-to-app funnels, targeting and Experiments.

How Experiments works

Experiments tests Offerings, RevenueCat's name for the set of products a paywall shows. So you can test prices, trial presence and length, intro offers, the number and mix of products, and paywall design, copy and images. Each experiment has 2 to 4 variants, and each treatment is compared on its own against the control.

Setup depends on your app showing the current Offering through a dynamic paywall. Once that's in place, the docs say no app changes are needed to run a test, because the work happens server-side.

How results are judged

This is where RevenueCat is strongest for subscription apps. Results cover initial conversion, trial conversion, conversion to paying and realized LTV per customer. Because subscriptions renew, results keep updating for 400 days after you stop a test so LTV can mature. Since February 2026, experiments with a revenue primary metric also show a predicted 12-month LTV winner once there's enough conversion data.

The stats are Bayesian. Each treatment gets a chance to win against the control, with credible intervals, and RevenueCat emails you if a treatment's realized LTV falls well behind. You decide when to call it. The docs say many developers treat a 95% chance to win as enough, depending on what's being tested and how much risk you'll accept. The June 2026 release added winner rollout, to send traffic to the winning variant in one step.

AI features

The Paywalls AI Editor, added in 2026, builds a paywall from a text prompt, edits it in plain language, adds translations and audits it before launch for problems such as a low-contrast button or a missing restore purchases link. Rico, an AI growth advisor, answers revenue questions in the dashboard and in Slack. You still choose what to test and launch each experiment yourself.

Company

RevenueCat raised a $50M Series C in May 2025, led by Bain Capital Ventures. It says it has processed more than $17B in revenue.

Who it suits

RevenueCat Experiments suits app teams already on RevenueCat, or planning to be, who want to test what users pay inside the app and judge it on money over time, not first-day conversion. It covers web paywalls and web-to-app funnels too. It doesn't test the marketing site, the pricing page outside the app, or ads.

Pros and cons

What RevenueCat does well

  • Experiments is included on every plan, even the free tier under $2,500 in monthly tracked revenue.
  • Results follow revenue over time. Realized LTV per customer keeps updating for 400 days after a test stops, and a predicted 12-month LTV winner appears once there's enough data.
  • Bayesian chance to win and credible intervals, plus an email if a variant falls well behind the control.
  • Variants are assigned server-side through Offerings, so no app release is needed if your app already shows the current Offering.
  • One backend for the App Store, Google Play, Amazon, Roku, Stripe, Paddle and its own web billing.
  • The Paywalls AI Editor builds a paywall from a text prompt.

Where it falls short

  • Experiments needs Offerings and a dynamic paywall that shows the current Offering, so first-time setup takes engineering work.
  • Past $2,500, the fee is a share of all tracked revenue, so the bill grows with the app rather than with how many tests you run.
  • Long-term results take time. Subscription price tests can need weeks or months before LTV is clear.
  • Built for app monetization. It doesn't test marketing sites, pricing pages or ads.

Questions people ask

Is RevenueCat Experiments free?+

Experiments is included in RevenueCat's Pro plan, which is free until you track $2,500 a month in revenue. After that you pay 1% of tracked revenue for the whole platform, with no separate charge for testing.

What can you test with RevenueCat Experiments?+

Prices, trial presence and length, intro offers, the number and mix of products, and paywall design, copy and images. Each experiment compares 2 to 4 Offerings.

How does RevenueCat decide a winner?+

It uses Bayesian stats to show each variant's chance to win against the control, with credible intervals. For revenue-based tests it also shows a predicted 12-month LTV winner. You decide when to stop; its docs say many developers treat 95% chance to win as enough.

Does RevenueCat test websites?+

It supports web paywalls and web-to-app funnels through RevenueCat Billing. It doesn't test marketing sites, pricing pages outside the app, or ads.

Can I use RevenueCat and Outtest together?+

Yes. Outtest connects to RevenueCat read-only as a payment data source. RevenueCat Experiments handles in-app paywall tests, and Outtest uses the same revenue to judge website, pricing page, trial and cancel flow tests on revenue per visitor.
