What Superwall does
Superwall describes itself as a standalone subscription platform for consumer mobile and web apps. It has two layers. The first is subscription infrastructure: entitlements, purchase APIs with server-side receipt validation for StoreKit 2 and Google Play Billing, webhooks, revenue analytics and SQL access to your subscription data. The second is the paywall product: a no-code editor, audience targeting and experiments.
Engineers add the SDK and register placements, the moments in the app where a paywall could appear. After that, the growth team designs paywalls in the editor and decides who sees what, all remotely. Superwall says paywalls are preloaded and cached on the device, so a new test reaches real users without an SDK upgrade or a store submission. The paywall itself renders in the app through the SDK, and Superwall's pages describe remote configuration rather than server-side experiments in the web testing sense.
Testing paywalls
An experiment is two or more paywalls shown to the same audience. You can test headlines, layout, imagery and social proof, monthly against annual, trial or no trial, intro offers and discounts, and the timing of the paywall. If your split adds up to less than 100%, the rest becomes a holdout that sees no paywall, which shows what the paywall is actually worth.
Results are reported on revenue. For each variant you see users, conversions, trial starts, proceeds and proceeds per user, with confidence intervals you can hover over. Purchase data comes from App Store Server Notifications and Google's real-time developer notifications. The docs don't say whether the intervals are Bayesian or frequentist, and they don't describe automatic winner calls, so you decide when to stop. Superwall's own guide to paywall tests recommends confirming a winner on retained revenue, such as 30-day revenue per user, before making it the default.
AI features
The paywall editor has an AI chat builder that creates and edits paywalls from a plain-language description, down to products, actions and localization. It doesn't publish for you: changes go live only when someone clicks publish. Superwall Agents is a separate workspace that reads your experiments and revenue data and proposes the next test to run. A person still creates and launches each experiment.
Web and payments
Superwall isn't limited to native apps. It has a web SDK with React bindings and App2Web, which sends iOS users to a Stripe checkout in Safari. Stripe Managed Payments can act as merchant of record for eligible web payments. Superwall also works alongside RevenueCat, which can send purchase events into Superwall, though Superwall says it works without any extra SDK.
Company
Superwall says it runs on more than 10,000 apps and handles more than $1.6B in annual subscription revenue. Customers named on its homepage include Quizlet, VSCO, Cal AI and Citizen. It has raised $7.5M from Adjacent and Acurio, with Y Combinator and FJ Labs, and in July 2026 it bought Tangent, a consultancy that designs paywalls and runs pricing tests for subscription apps.
Who it suits
Superwall fits subscription apps where the paywall is the main place money changes hands, especially teams that want to test often without waiting on app review. It's not built for testing a marketing site, a pricing page or ads.
Pros and cons
What Superwall does well
- Change and test paywalls remotely, with no app release or store review.
- No-code paywall editor, plus an AI chat builder that builds and edits paywalls from a description.
- Results are shown on revenue (proceeds per user), not only taps or trial starts.
- The subscription backend is free, and the paywall product costs nothing until paywalls earn $10k a month.
- Holdout groups that see no paywall at all, so you can measure what the paywall itself is worth.
- SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, Expo, Unity and web.
Where it falls short
- Built around the paywall. It doesn't test your marketing site, pricing page or ads.
- Past $10k a month, the 1% fee grows with paywall revenue, so the bill scales with success rather than with how many tests you run.
- The docs show confidence intervals but don't say which statistical method sits behind them, and you decide when a test is done.
- AI helps design paywalls and suggests the next test, but a person still sets up and publishes each experiment.
Questions people ask
How much does Superwall cost?+
The subscription backend is free at any scale. The paywall product is free up to $10k a month in paywall-attributed revenue, then 1% of paywall-attributed revenue. Superwall's own example: an app with $25k a month of paywall revenue pays $250 a month.
Do I need to ship an app update to run a Superwall test?+
Not after setup. Engineers register placements in the SDK once, and after that paywalls and experiments are configured remotely, with no SDK upgrade or store submission for each test.
Can I use Superwall with RevenueCat?+
Yes. Superwall has guides for using RevenueCat to handle purchases, and RevenueCat can send purchase events to Superwall. Superwall also works on its own without any other SDK.
Does Superwall test websites?+
It has a web SDK for web paywalls and can send iOS users to a Stripe checkout. It's built around the paywall, though, not your marketing site, pricing page or ads.
Superwall or Outtest?+
They cover different parts of the funnel. Superwall tests native and web paywalls inside your app. Outtest tests websites, pricing pages, trials, cancel flows, Meta ads and SEO, judged on revenue per visitor from your payment tool, and doesn't test native app paywalls.
