What GrowthBook is
GrowthBook combines feature flags, A/B tests and product analytics. Graham McNicoll and Jeremy Dorn founded it in 2020 after running experiments together at Education.com. The code is open core. Most of it is MIT licensed, and some directories sit under a commercial GrowthBook Enterprise License. You can use GrowthBook Cloud or run it yourself with Docker Compose, and the repository had 8.4k GitHub stars when we checked.
How it works
You add an SDK. Client SDKs cover JavaScript, React, Vue, Next.js, iOS, Android, Flutter and React Native. Server SDKs cover Node.js, PHP, Ruby, Python, Java, C#, Go, Elixir and Rust. Edge SDKs run on Cloudflare Workers, Fastly Compute and Lambda@Edge. On cloud plans, SDKs fetch your feature and experiment config through a CDN, which is what the CDN request allowance measures.
Analysis happens in your data warehouse. GrowthBook connects to BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, ClickHouse, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Athena, Presto or Trino, Vertica and Mixpanel. You define Fact Tables, which are SQL SELECT statements, and build metrics on top. A revenue per user metric is a SUM over the column that holds the order total. If you have no warehouse, cloud plans include a managed one with a monthly event allowance.
Stats
Bayesian is the default, and GrowthBook says it picked that because chance to win is easier for most customers to act on. You can switch to frequentist at the organization or project level, add sequential testing to frequentist analysis, and turn on CUPED for either engine. Pro adds multi-armed bandits and safe rollouts.
Visual editor and AI
The AI visual editor lets you describe a change in plain English, such as a shorter headline or a different button color, and turns it into page edits you approve. It can generate alternative headlines, rewrite copy in a different tone, swap images, add custom CSS or JavaScript, and suggest experiment ideas. GrowthBook lists it under Pro. There are integrations for Shopify, Webflow and WordPress, and the Shopify one tracks experiment views through GA4 or Segment if you already run them.
Revenue
GrowthBook has no native Stripe connector. To test on revenue you need purchase data in your warehouse, synced by your own pipeline, or purchase events sent to the managed warehouse, then a SQL metric on top. That's routine for a data team and a real hurdle for a founder without one.
Who it suits
GrowthBook suits product and data teams that already have a warehouse, want results computed from their own numbers, and like having the option to self-host. Named users on its site include Dropbox, the Wikimedia Foundation, Quizlet, Sony and Khan Academy. Small marketing teams can use the visual editor, but decisions on revenue still depend on someone setting up SQL metrics.
Before you commit
Count seats, not visitors. Pro is capped at 30 users, so a larger team moves to Enterprise. If you self-host, budget for the hosting and the time to keep it upgraded.
Pros and cons
What GrowthBook does well
- Open source. You can self-host the core product for free with unlimited users.
- Seat-based pricing with unlimited traffic, so the bill doesn't rise with visitors.
- Warehouse native. It queries BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, ClickHouse, Postgres and more, so results use your own numbers.
- Bayesian by default with a frequentist option, sequential testing and CUPED.
- The AI visual editor turns plain-English requests into page edits and can suggest alternative headlines and copy.
- SDKs for web, mobile, server and edge, including Cloudflare Workers, Fastly and Lambda@Edge.
Where it falls short
- At $40 per seat, a 10-person team on Pro pays $400 a month.
- No native Stripe connector. Revenue metrics come from SQL over your warehouse or events you send to the managed warehouse.
- To get full value you need a data warehouse and someone who can write SQL metric definitions.
- Self-hosting is free to license, but you run the servers, upgrades and uptime.
- The AI works inside the editor. You still set up each experiment, pick metrics, launch it and decide on the result.
Questions people ask
Is GrowthBook free?+
Yes, in two ways. The open-source version is free to self-host with unlimited users, and the cloud Starter plan is free for up to 3 users. Pro is $40 per seat a month, and Enterprise is custom.
Can I self-host GrowthBook?+
Yes. The repository ships a Docker Compose setup, so you can clone it and run docker compose up. Most of the code is MIT licensed, and some enterprise features sit under a separate commercial license.
Does GrowthBook use Bayesian or frequentist statistics?+
Both. Bayesian is the default, and you can switch to frequentist per organization or project. Sequential testing is available for frequentist analysis, and CUPED works with either engine.
Does GrowthBook need a data warehouse?+
It's built to query your own warehouse, such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks or Postgres. If you don't have one, cloud plans include a managed warehouse with 1M events a month on Starter and 2M on Pro.
Can GrowthBook measure revenue from Stripe?+
Not directly. There's no native Stripe connector, so revenue has to reach your warehouse or the managed warehouse first, and then you define a SQL metric such as a SUM of order totals. Outtest reads revenue straight from Stripe and other payment tools and judges every test on revenue per visitor.
